Ms. Eckerle and her Honors PreCalc students applied their knowledge of conics by turning Lakeland's LGI into a miniature putt putt course on Friday, April 15th. Staff and students celebrated their hard work on completing the project by challenging one another to a day on the greens! Rumor has it Mr. Hamill struggled on the front 9, but edged out Mr. Gmelin after his snowman on hole 14.
Herzliche Glückwünsche!
Imagine a "Language Olympics" for high schoolers - well, there is such a thing and it's called German Day!. Students compete in a variety of categories to showcase their language skills and cultural knowledge at this annual event hosted by the University of Michigan. Many of the categories are on the spot and all are judged by college professors and students of German at U of M. THIS YEAR, LAKELAND STUDENTS TOOK 1ST PLACE IN THREE DIFFERENT CATEGORIES! Our students were also competing against other students who attend immersion / partial immersion schools, and take German not only as a foreign language, but receive instruction of other courses in German as well. CONGRATULATIONS to Mrs. Kokotovich and her students! |

.April 16 and 17 was a very exciting weekend for the HOT Robotics Team as they brought home gold from the FIRST in Michigan Robotics State Championship held in Grand Rapids. Only the top 102 of Michigan’s 411 FIRST teams qualified to attend one of the most competitive robotics events in the world. The HOT team went into the State Championship as the top ranked team in the state, earning this rank by winning both of its district events.
The HOT Team is a team of hardworking students from Milford High School, Lakeland High School and the International Academy West whose dedication to math, science, technology, and each other is unparalleled to any group of young adults in the state. These students work with mentors from the GM Proving Ground and HVS to design, machine, build, wire and program their competition robot. At competition, each student has an important role to fill. We have a top notch pit crew of students who knew how to fix the robot. In pit crew was Melissa Brei, Frank Xia, William Caradonna, and Angela Butkovich. We have programmers in the pit crew, Marlina Bowring and Chad Abou-Hamdan, who add autonomous capabilities to our robot. The robot is controlled by Ashleigh Heath and Noah Beattie. Kaden Allen is the human interface between the robot and the game. Our scouting team lead by Hunter Barnes, Michael Alex Brown and Danielle Cummins; and consisting of scouts Tyler Bartlett, Henry Baxter, David Bonhard, Devin Brown, Michael Caradonna, Alexander Coleman, Joshua Conrad, Amanda Fairchild, John Flowers, Alexis Fosmer, Noah Gould, Joseph Hatfield, Natalie Heywood, Jackson Holper, Juliana Jakubczak, Franklin Jeffery, Aiden Jerome, Paul Johnecheck, Cody Kallay, Varun Kutirakulam, Ian Larsen, Nicklas Lieske, Brandon Mackey, Riley Morris, Jakob Olechiw, Christopher Pietsch, Maddy Rose, Marin Sakuma, Sarah Schang, Bradley Schoff, Sebastian Siver, Brien Smith, Erick Smith, Michael Streng, Alec Swirczek, Karel Venegas and Sara Winstead worked tirelessly to provide the drive team and their coach, Jim Meyer, critical real time information about the teams in the competition. Even though these students are up in the stands, their contribution is absolutely critical for our team’s success on the field. Their data is essential for determining game strategy and choosing elimination tournament alliance partners.
In two weeks , the HOT Team travels to Saint Louis to compete in the FIRST Robotics World Championship. You can watch the tournament live on www.thebluealliance.com.

On Thursday, April 28, members of the LHS National Honor Society coordinated a "senior" prom for the residents at Westlake. The students were responsible for setting up all the decorations, providing the music for dancing, setting up and operating a photobooth, operating a game room and crowning a king and queen. Most importantly, students got to spend the night interacting with the greatest generation sharing stories and memories with the residences. Big thanks to Bob Green for sending his jazz quartet to play for everyone. Marina Michelich and Jillian Schubpach also sang beautifully for the crowd. If you see Lauren Barnes, Madison Lyman, and/or Justine Burt congratulate them on successfully coordinating a very successful event. |

Both these players epitomize the term student-athlete. The staff at LHS is very proud of Jake and Tyler! According to Coach Todd MIller, "they are bound to do great things on and off the field based on their work ethic alone."
