ATHLETICS
The Lakeland Varsity Girls Basketball team traveled to the University of Tennessee(Knoxville) for team-bonding and to visit one to the most prestigious girls basketball programs at the collegiate level. The team attended a UT practice, toured the entire basketball facility, visited the newly-opened plaza celebrating the accomplishments of former UT coach Pat Summitt, checked out the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, and watched a game between the UT Lady Vols and the Oakland University (Rochester, MI) Grizzlies. Former Lakeland player Amy Carlton, a Class of 2010 graduate, started for Oakland and played over half the game. |
The Lakeland High School Athletic Department will be leading a new anti-bullying and hazing program by utilizing our high school athletic leaders to help educate Huron Valley elementary students in the prevention of these specific types of harassment. (12/2/13), Kara Cotter, Tiffany Azzo, Alana Weyer, Sarah Leffler, Bryant Thickston, Jacob Spry and Alex Haren kicked-off the anti-bullying and hazing program at Spring Mills Elementary. |
ACADEMICS
Congratulations to the Business Management & Technology III students from Mrs. Schmitt's Virtual Enterprises International (VEI) firm, Dexacorp, who had an excellent showing once again at the annual Tennessee Trade Show! This year, over 93 VEI firms and 1,200 students representing firms from Tennessee, Michigan, Illinois, North Carolina, and South Carolina participated in the event as they gathered together to showcase their products and services, strengthen business contacts, and boost their sales. Seven students represented our firm this year and brought back the following honors:
Top 10 placement in the Impact Marketing (billboard) Competition. Impact Marketing submission (a fabulous billboard created by Ashley Gurzick) also placed in the Top 10 for the Tennessee Trade Show! Congratulations again to Ashley & to our Dexacorp team! Students, in Mrs. Olgiersson's Child Development class, made puppets for the therapists at Care House to give children that need to tell "their story." Lori Kopczyk and Mr. Howe took 8 students to the Detroit Economic Club Luncheon and got to meet Rand Paul, Senator from Kentucky. Nate Raab, Michael Kutzleb, and Nick Michela came in 2nd out of 1,982 teams in the statewide stock market competition. Each team had a virtual $100,000 to invest and their team made apx. $32,000 in a ten week time period!! Pretty good return on their money!! The 38th annual Holiday Hope for Kids event took place on Thursday Dec 12th, 2013 in the Lakeland Aux Gym. Close to 100 special needs students from all across Oakland County came to spend the day with 175 Lakeland students who helped setup, fund raise, and buy gifts for all the students in attendance. The day included special visits from Santa Paws from the Detroit Tigers, and the big elf himself Santa Claus. The event was hosted and prepared by the Lakeland Leadership class and sponsored by Marco's Pizza, HVEA, Highland Supply, Highland House, and IMP Printing of Farmington Hills. |
ARTS
The Lakeland Bands are very busy with community events supporting the local community this month. The Lakeland Marching Band will perform in the Pontiac Holiday Extravaganza Parade on Saturday, December 7th. They will also tour our middle schools with performances at Oak Valley and White Lake Middle School on December 5th. The Lakeland Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble will perform on Saturday, December 14th at the 1st Festival of Lights here on the Lakeland Campus, and the Wind Ensemble will perform at the Holiday Hope for Kids party onDecember 12th. In addition, Madison Tluczek, our Feature Majorette with the Lakeland Marching Band competed at the Miss USA Majorette Competition in Ohio on November 30th, capturing 3rd place overall!!! |
